Why are Americans proud of Vietnam?

The Vietnamese were famously very gentle people before the war plus America was fighting on the side of a corrupt capitalist dictator. They had no support from neither North nor South Vietnamese and only went to the war to pursue their policy of containment. They lost the war also. This begs the question, 'Why are modern Americans proud of this war?'
