Why was containment so important to Britain and the U.S?

Both countries, Britain and U.S preferred free and a democratic society based on free elections for a choice to elect its own Leaders .This was just the opposite of Communism and that was why they wanted to contain Communism and not allowing them to spread. China the last country, was seen to and beginning to adopt an open door policy with other countries especially in trade and technical 'know how.'
