When you plug a mono plug into a stereo output, doesn't it short the right channel to ground?

From what I've read here: a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector#Mono_and_stereo_compatibility" rel="nofollow"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connect…/a it seems that the "ring" part of the connector on a stereo plug is in line with the "sleeve" part of the mono plug. If you plugged a mono plug into a stereo jack, wouldn't this short the right channel (the ring) to ground? Can shorting either channel to ground be problematic? (I would certainly think so, but it seems maybe not)
